Archaeologists In Israel Just Unearthed A Striking 1,500-Year-Old Mosaic

After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, archaeologists from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have returned to sites near the Sea of Galilee in Israel and have made a surprising discovery. There, near the northern end of Lake Tiberias, they discovered an ancient mosaic that once stood in the shadow of the Caliph’s palace.

Archaeologists found it near the Umayyad-built palace called Khirbat al-Minya. According to their study of the site, the palace was built by a caliph around the 8th century AD. But mosaics and other ceramics from the 5th to 7th centuries suggest that the palace was built near a pre-existing settlement

All in all, Kuhnen and his team are excited about the discovery of mosaics, which they believe depict ancient and forgotten life in Israel today.
