Why Did World War II Start?

World War II

A number of historical factors led to World War II. Germany’s defeat in World War I and the punishing Treaty of Versailles sowed resentment among many Germans. This, and the economic downturn of the 1930s, paved the way for the rise of Adolf Hitler — who often blamed Jews for Germany’s problems.

World War II

At the same time, Japan had begun to build its large empire in the Pacific. Throughout the 1930s, Japanese forces were increasingly aggressive toward China, culminating with the Japanese invasion of the country in 1937.

World War II

(As the conflict dragged on, Japan would go on to commit numerous war crimes, including forcing over 200,000 girls and women into sexual slavery, conducting experiments on kidnapped Chinese civilians, and regularly executing — and sometimes even cannibalizing — their prisoners of war.)

World War II

And, just as in World War I, varying alliances bound many countries together. Germany and Japan had signed an Anti-Comintern Pact in 1936, which Italy joined in 1937, laying the foundation for the Axis powers. Likewise, France and Britain promised to protect Poland shortly before Germany invaded in 1939.

Queen Elizabeth In World War II: The Little-Known Story Of ‘Princess Auto Mechanic’

The future Queen Elizabeth was barely a teenager when World War II threatened her nation, but she was determined to do what she could for her country — and she soon became the first female member of the royal family to enlist in the British Army.

Princess Elizabeth was the first woman in the British royal family to join the military. In her role as a mechanic, the future queen took apart engines, changed tires, and learned to drive trucks and ambulances.

According to the National World War II Museum, women in Britain who were under the age of 30 and unmarried at the time were required to enlist in the armed forces, work on the land, or join an industry. Elizabeth didn’t want special treatment due to her royal status — she simply wanted to do her part.

Less than seven years after the war ended, “Princess Auto Mechanic” was coronated as Queen of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms at age 25. In many ways, the service of Queen Elizabeth during World War II helped prepare her for a lifetime of service to her country.

Centuries of bloodshed, foreign domination, and internal divisions have left Ukraine in a precarious position between East and West

Centuries of bloodshed, foreign domination, and internal divisions have left Ukraine in a precarious position between East and West.

As the threat of a Russian invasion of Ukraine continues to dominate the news, a look back at the long, intertwined history of the contentious neighbours reveals how the stage was set for today’s conflict.

The two countries’ shared heritage goes back more than a thousand years to a time when Kyiv, now Ukraine’s capital, was at the centre of the first Slavic state, Kyivan Rus, the birthplace of both Ukraine and Russia

n A.D. 988 Vladimir I, the pagan prince of Novgorod and grand prince of Kyiv, accepted the Orthodox Christian faith and was baptised in the Crimean city of Chersonesus.

From that moment on, Russian leader Vladimir Putin recently declared, “Russians and Ukrainians are one people, a single whole.”

Witchcraft in the times of henry viii and beyond

Witchcraft in the times of henry viii and beyond

Years before Henry acceded to the throne, Pope Innocent VIII had decreed in a papal bull document of 1484 that ‘sorceresses were real and harmful through their involvement in the acts of Satan’

Unlike growing paranoia over witchcraft and the practising of it on the continent, England’s climate was more muted and more accepting of some forms of divination.

This tradition of practising magic, spell casting and communicating with the dead, didn’t always attract the wrath of the Catholic Church to the point of condemnation until such assumed practices were viewed as demonic and heretical.

For King Henry sorcery was acceptable as long as it tallied with his own beliefs and favoured his ambitions and prejudices.
